Can Democracy Survive Global Capitalism?

Robert Kuttner argues that laissez-faire capitalism, not technology or globalization, drives inequality and endangers democracy by concentrating power with financiers. He points to past financial deregulation that harmed society and calls for a regulated economy like the post-WWII era to ensure balanced growth. Without reform, he warns, democracy remains at risk.

Women, Race, & Class.

Angela Davis’s book critiques the feminist movement’s history, focusing on its exclusion of Black women, lower-class women, and others marginalized by race and class. She examines how issues like the anti-rape movement, capitalism’s impact on housework, and reproductive rights often ignored or oppressed non-white, lower-class women. Davis also honors activists like Ida B. Wells and W.E.B. Du Bois who challenged these injustices. Despite being published in 1983, the book remains relevant, highlighting the persistent exclusion within mainstream feminism.

FREEDOM!

The young adult novel *FREEDOM!* transports readers to the 1960s, detailing the history of the Black Panther Party through its founders Huey Newton, Bobby Seale, and Eldridge Cleaver, and their responses to systemic racism and police violence. It highlights the impact of notable members like Fred Hampton and Ericka Huggins, while addressing the FBI's COINTELPRO program, which sowed distrust within the Party. The book also explores the pivotal roles of women in the organization, running essential community programs despite facing harassment and inequality within the Party. Complete with powerful photos, timelines, and biographies, *FREEDOM!* offers a rich educational perspective on the Panthers' legacy.

Intercourse

Andrea Dworkin, once dubbed "Feminism's Malcolm X," has sparked fierce debates and inspired generations with her powerful writing and intense intellect. Her book Intercourse, which famously divided the feminist movement, is now being reissued for a new generation. Originally published in 1987, the book argues that in a male-dominated society, heterosexual sex reinforces women’s subjugation—an argument often misinterpreted as “all sex is rape.” In her introduction to this edition, Ariel Levy reflects on Dworkin’s impact, posing feminism’s most challenging question: Can a woman truly fight the power when he shares her bed?
